This here was last Sunday’s going to the city and gym -look. In the end of summer I wrote how I wanted to get back on track with exercising, cooking and other small everyday things. I had been on the go all summer – didn’t go to the gym nearly at all and just didn’t have any everyday routines – I was afraid how I would survive autumn. I had been surrounded by people all the time, didn’t spend much time home, and suddenly I was suppose to get my life back together and live alone without feeling like out of this world. You know what I mean?
At first I felt like I’ll rather just take a nap instead of going to the gym. The thought of working out just felt like blah. The first few times I had the wrong attitude, I only thought that oh my god I can’t do this, I’ve become so weak during the summer. And everyone is probably staring what the hell I’m doing here. But just like in many things, the start is tough. Luckily I got through it, after finally getting that feeling after working out and letting go of the bad self-blaming thoughts. I remembered what it’s all about. “I regret working out” said no one ever.
Working out helps me to stay positive, energetic and as weird as it might sound: going to the gym also gives me that feeling of a community. Many people might have that in their workplace or school, to me it’s in the body pump class or in that hot yoga room. I prefer going to the classes over lifting weights alone much more. And when it comes to the classes, I love variety: body pump, core workouts, yoga, pilates… Next I want to try air yoga and maybe some dance class. If I get tired to something, I can just drop it, try something new, find the workouts I enjoy.
I can honestly say, that I’m purely working out only because I love the feeling it gives me. If I have negativity or I’m just feeling sluggish, working out releases it every time. It clears my mind, gets me back to that calm clever thinking. Helps me to stay active in general. Hahah believe me, I’d go nuts without it. And it’s so relieving, knowing you’re only working out because of mental reasons. I don’t have to look in the mirror searching for results and then get disappointed and lose motivation and so on. The results are mental and immediate, that is only thing that matters to me. (“No pain no gain” is probably the most annoying quote there is.) It’s also good to give yourself rest days, If I’m really feeling tired or just not in the mood, I’ll skip the gym and not beat myself up about it. Sometimes a walk in the nature is what I need, instead of sweating at the gym. The whole fitness thing is so not for me, it’d be horrible if the main thing in my life would be sports and eating clean or whatsoever. That’s not me, not what I’m here to do, and not how I want to spend my life. Not meaning to judge, but it would just take space from the things that actually matter to me, and I just think it’s terrifying how you can get blind and fall into that fitness cycle, when your life starts to only be around that thing. Or maybe I simply don’t get it because it’s not for me, and someone else gets it differently! For me working out is just like a helper to keep me energetic towards other things.
Soon I’ll get some new everyday routines: taking walks with my dog. From Friday on… ♥
By the way, can anyone relate to how I’m working out? Or what’s your favorite type of workout?
Pian mulla on vähän uudenlaisia arjen rutiineja, perjantaista lähtien nimittäin koiran ulkoilutusta… ♥
Pystyykö muuten kukaan samaistumaan näihin ajatuksiin urheilusta? Vai mikä on teidän lempitapanne?

Working out is so important and everybody should do it at least twice a week for their over all well being.
Great theme that can be talked about even more. I like your jacket and sneakers very much!

Same here! I was so lazy this summer. This summer was sooo hot here in Croatia and I didn’t workout at all. I know it’s not an excuse, but…
Now, since Fall is here I am planning to go back on track. I like to workout in my room, watching some videos on Youtube. Mostly monthly Blogilates challange by Cassey Ho. 🙂
P.S. Love your outfit, Marianna! 🙂
xx,
Martina
Marianna says
So you were exactly like me! 🙂 But I think it’s good to take a summer break, when you have other stuff to do and don’t feel like working out, it’s ok to take a break! Good luck with getting back on track, the feeling after work out is so great! x

I’m more a running person but I do some workout too in complement. I feel so good after my run, it’s like “my moment”, I can think about everything a want, just listening some music… Whatever it’s a great feeling 🙂
Marianna says
Oh! 🙂 I’ve always been a little jealous to running persons haha, but I guess I’m just more of a power walk type of person 😀 So good to find your own thing! But I love it too, when you can just clear your mind, listen to music and enjoy the nature! x
Lauren says
I have a lot of variety in my workout routine too, I think it helps working your body in different ways. I do two cardio classes per week, two weights classes and two holistic classes x

Hey Marianna!
I absolutely agree with you! Working out should be fun and give you a good, positive and energetic feeling pre,- while,- and post workout. The best thing about working out is that’s it’s also super healthy for your body, so if you’re having fun, you get great physical and mental results without stressing yourself too much about it. So I’m thinking exactly the same way 🙂 I also think that everyone should find their individual exercises and routines that work for them so I think there is no right or wrong here, as long as you’re happy with it 🙂
xo Clara
Marianna says
Hi Clara! Exactly, the main reason for working out is to feel good mentally and physically! And yeah everyone has their own thing, it can be anything for dancing to doing yoga or playing tennis. 🙂 x

I didn’t work out at all this summer, but I’m not gonna blame myself – there is a time for everything! And now I feel that it is time to go back to the gym, because as you say, it will make my everyday life easier.. This was exactly the blog post I needed today, because first work-out in months is gonna happen TODAY 😉 I will feel so weak haha…but who cares!
Marianna says
I felt the same way in the end of last month, and it’s amazing how quickly you can get back on track with exercising and forget you ever had a break, you just get addicted to that feeling after the workout! 🙂 I’m so happy to hear if my post helped! x

I do miss when I used to work out in a gym that offered classes. I loved the “community” feel, as you put it. That gym didn’t really have my kind of crowd though, so I always felt uncomfortable there. I switched to a small, quieter gym about a year ago, and I love the atmosphere of being in there. There are usually just a couple other people, so I feel like I have company, but no one is judging me. I agree with you though – I work out to be a healthy person, overall, and for no other reason than that. I’ve finally come to the conclusion that we all have a weight/size that our bodies are most comfortable being, and I’m respecting mine by not pushing it to lose weight or have 6 pack abs. Life is too short! I just want to have the health and energy to do the things in life that I REALLY want to do, like hiking and traveling with my loved ones. I usually go to the gym and use a workout app on my phone that guides me through exercises, so that I know I’m working on a variety of things.
Your new puppy will LOVE her daily walks with you. I have a dog who is now 5 years old and she still gets SO excited every time I get her ready for a walk. And I don’t know why, we have a big fenced backyard that she gets to run around in without a leash and collar all the time, but she loves when I put on her leash and she knows she’s getting to go somewhere different than usual.
Marianna says
Thank you for the lovely comment Aimee! I agree with you, and sounds like you have found a good way to workout too! Aw, I can’t wait for the walks with my dog, your dog sounds so cute! x

I completely agree! And though I’ve got a few pounds I could use to lose, I’m not unhealthy, overweight, or anything, so I try to just keep it slow and steady. I have my splurges occasionally, and I try to incorporate fruits and veggies. I think you’ve been blessed by being raised to enjoy fruits and veggies, but not everyone has, so it takes effort to not be obese. It’s much easier to stay thin and healthy than to undo tons of weight and unhealthy living. I never overdo myself. I do some minimal jogging/walking and some pilates and yoga. I’m not one who works out 4 times a week though. I want to workout a few times a week consistently. Sometimes it’s more like 1 time a week. But I’m with you that I want to live my life not obsessed with how I look and how I eat and how much I exercise. Life is so much more than that. And while I want to take care of the only body I’ll ever have, I don’t want to waste the only life I’ll ever have obsessing over my body. I’ve got some thighs, but my husband loves me and thinks I’m beautiful, so who cares? I do my squats and I don’t over eat, so I’m going to enjoy cookies every so often and coke when I like.
Love your philosophy!
Marianna says
You’re so right on that! The best thing is to find your own way of staying active, listening to your body for what it wants, and just enjoy life. I’ve gained weight from what I was some years ago, but I don’t feel pressured to look like fitness girls on instagram or fit into my old jeans, I think when you truly just chill your body will find its best weight. Everyone is different, and most important thing is to enjoy life, be happy as who you are and not waste life on obsessing over things that don’t matter 🙂 Thank you again for the amazing comment! x

You’re so positive Marianna, that’s why I love reading your blog !
I quite like fitness as well but as you said I don’t want to get involved in that vicious cycle in which eat clean is all that matters.
You must want to do what you do otherwise what’s the point ?
I like dancing so I’m taking zumba classes. It’s so dynamic, you’re forced to feel great after it ! You should try 🙂
Lots of love from Paris.

I just signed up in a gym for the first time and my goal is exactly like yours, to help me feel more active and to help to make me focus easily on the other more important things I have in my life at the moment. And to help my body to feel less “stuck”, as I work +8 hours a day in front of a computer. ^^
This post made me feel more inspired as I’m not the only one to think that way. Thank you for posting this!

What do you think about refugees?
Marianna says
I don’t have any special opinion (or at least anything negative), I think they are humans just like everyone else, and everyone deserves a safe place to live. 🙂
Isabel says
Hello Marianna
I totally agree with you. I think the whole ‘no pain no gain’ thing and working out just to manipulate your body, change it so that it ‘fits’ what society makes you believe is acceptable or just burn calories will only make you hate it in the end and your body is going to rebel because it’ll just feel like punishment.
If you focus on moving and how good it makes you feel and choose the type of movement that your body loves, it’s a completely different thing!
Marianna says
Hi Isabel! Thank you so much for the comment, I agree with you 100%! Couldn’t have said it better than that! x

Thank you Brigitte! 🙂 I have sometimes phases too when I’m less motivated, but then I’ll try to keep in mind that feeling after working out, and usually then after remembering it I get naturally motivated again! x

Hi Marianna! You article is just at time, because today i want to start going to the gym. And you article just give me more motivation. I agree with you, it’s hard to start after a long pause. Oh gosh)) But that feeling after workout worth it. For me the best types is callanetics. It’s kind of mix of yoga and gymnastics. And it clears your mind so good and you feel so happy. Love that feeling))You should try!
Wish you always have that positive attitude and can’t wait to see you puppy!))

Your words really resonated with me! I run very frequently. I stay in hall in school, and I run almost every night (except when class ends late or if I’m very tired) and my friends always wonder why I exercise so much. It’s not really to lose weight (that is a bonus) but more the good feeling it gives me. I like pounding on the pavement when I’m stressed or worried about things in my life. Also, it makes me feel good after I exercise, like I’m more energetic and happy that I managed to push myself instead of slouching around my room. To switch things up, I run different routes (have been to some scary and remote spots in school, haha), or run in the gym. If not, I do Insanity. 🙂
