I’ve got a lot of questions by the time – especially on e-mail – how to be a better blogger. I don’t know how to exactly answer on that one, but I decided to list some thing that are helping me. So note that this isn’t any guide how to blog, just my random thoughts. The pictures here are just for fun, memories from blogging.
(Suomennos alkaa kolmannen kuvan alta)
– Enjoy blogging, be spontaneous and don’t plan too much. I’m always surprised, that the more I don’t plan what I write the more interesting the post is, in my opinion. Blogs aren’t suppose to look like fashion magazines and outfit posts like high-fashion editorial photoshoots. I personally get more inspiration out of blogs with real people and real life, and the kind of clothes you can actually wear.
– Post often enough, but don’t take pressure of it. Now that I’m posting for about every other day I feel blogging is much easier than before. When I posted like once a week I stressed about if the material was good enough and made just really long and messy posts to make sure it was enough. And I didn’t let the creativity to flow 24/7, I just randomly got these guilty feelings “Oh no I haven’t posted anything for days now so I’m taking my camera and just shooting everything for the next hour”. Haha, I’m happy I’ve found a better way now.
– Appreciate your readers and let blogging be interactive. (Still trying to be better in answering the comments!)
– Being on the social media never hurts. If it doesn’t feel good, then don’t do it. I tried Twitter, but it didn’t really feel natural for me. Then when I started instagramming, I knew that was my thing. Now I’m so addicted.
New York Fashion Week
– Don’t think what others do, do everything your own way. Think about your personality, real interests and what comes naturally. The photography, writing, visual stuff and layout, everything has to be you. Then you’ll feel more creative and yourself, and you’re able to make better content cause your comfortable in the environment. And thinking in long term – pretending to be something else will eventually show up, and your more likely to get tired of blogging.
– Also, don’t think what others think. I can’t say I’m succeeding in this 100%, a part of me still thinks too much in general. But there is no way you could please everyone, so why even bother trying. Don’t be afraid to show your personality. Rude comments will always come from time to time, no matter what, you have to learn not to let them get to you. (There’s a big difference between critical comments and the inappropriate ones!) I remember when I first started blogging and got the very first harsh comments, I was so close deleting my blog and stopping it there. Thankfully I didn’t! I’ve had lots of them by the years, sometimes I weigh too much sometimes too little, sometimes I have too much makeup, too boring outfits, too much the same, etc… But they don’t really affect me anymore, I know who I am and blog has even helped me in that.
– … But if the harsh comments were about more personal things, it would get to me in a whole different way. So that’s why I don’t reveal too much or write the kind of things I don’t want random people on the street to know about me. I write an old-fashioned diary, which is for the personal stuff. Writing is really therapeutic, but to know what to write and where is important.

Great tips here Marianna! Blogging should definitely come from the heart and be personal. I get most inspiration from bloggers who wear clothes that are real and wearable too, I wear them that way. I did a post similar to this some months ago about blogging and how to create a fashion blog, so tips are always useful!

Hi Marianna,
Thank you for this post! I always love reading your tips. These kind of posts once again show what a sweet and honest person you are. I sometimes don’t understand why people write mean comments. If they don’t like an outfit or don’t like someones style or blog in general, than don’t read it. This is still a free world where everyone can be themselves. I do appreciate constructive comments though!
I started my own blog in May this year, after a year filled with doubts. I was kind of afraid of what my friends and family would think. Luckely, many of my friends and relatives are very supportive and really like my blog, some of them think blogging is stupid and is a way to show off your things etc., but that’s really not what I want to do! I just like to share my inspirations, my loves & likes and the fun things in life, because life can be way to serious sometimes. I think that you feel the same way about it.
The thing I find difficult about blogging is spreading out your blog and get readers to find you. The readers that do find my blog give me such positive feedback, but it’s hard to find the right sources to really put your blog on the radar.
Do you have any tips for that? Or maybe other readers over here?
Many thanks again for this lovely post.
X Sara

Hey Marianna,
Thanks for that post. I really appreciate it. I’m thinking about starting a blog on my own, but I’m not sure yet. But your thoughts might be good help 🙂 I think you can’t tell anyone to be a good or better blogger. Your personality defines your blog, nothing else.
For me, you’re my biggest inspiration in life. I know, I told you this so many times and you might be annoyed by me sometimes, but I just can’t help. Because of you I changed so many things in my life, and I’m so gratful for that.
I think I couldn’t handle those hard comments, and I wrote a few by myself and I’m still sorry for that. But you’re dealing could with them 🙂 and I fully understand why you don’t share your private life so much. There are so many bloggers who’re doing that and I don’t know, I’m not a fan of it.
Of course the most important thing is to appreciate your readers. But there’s one thing I’d like to criticize, you should try to answer more of your readers comments. I know that you don’t answer any of your mails, as you receive a lot of them. Also on Instagram. 🙂 of course you’re busy and you don’t have always time at all, but I guess you know what I mean. And please, don’t promise anything if you don’t keep it. Yes, I’m talking about the letter, but I’m over it. So please don’t get me wrong I don’t mean to be rude, I just wanna be honest. 🙂
I still love you and your blog, & I will always support you!
Take care,
Anna

I absolutely loved this article! Actually, what for me really makes your blog is the fact that you not only show beautiful pictures, but you write a bit too. There are loads of blogs that don’t write at all and for me it kills it! You are so natural and sincere that the whole blog kind a feels that way 🙂 Your tips were really helpful, especially since I’ve got some harsh feedback as well – mainly because I’m size 12 and there have been people who say I’m too fat to blog and I can’t do it .. well, who cares, I will continue and I’m so happy to have read your post, because it really gave me some strength to keep going ! 🙂

Hey!
Do you normally write first in english or finnish? I’m just curious, because I like your both texts are good and doesn’t sound like “akward translations”. 🙂 As many translations in finnish blogs do sound..

The Style Report says
Hello,
I don’t know when I stumbled upon your blog but what I do know is that since then I never stopped following it.
I like your outfit posts because your style is a mix of simple & stylish clothes, cool and affordable pieces mixed with some high end items and that’s exactly what I like to wear, so you are an inspiration for me in that matter.
But also because I find you have great taste in home decor and taking beautiful photos.
I would really love to see more home decor posts and maybe your tips on how to decorate a bedroom and living room with just a few items.
I’m trying to learn more about photography, finding the right angle, light, etc., so since you have amazing skills with that maybe you could once in a while write some photography tips?
The only tip I can recommend you (if I may) is to answer comments more often and always write in outfit posts where & specially WHEN where the pieces bought. For example: Zara knit (SS13) Mango Skirt (AW13).
Oh, and it doesn’t bother me at all if you only post once a week, although 2 or 3 times a week is awesome.
Thanks for the tips, xoxo

You said that you should know what to write and where, so that the negative comments couldn’t get under your skin. In my opinion you should be able to take critic even of the important stuff. And just negative comments that aren’t really critical should just be pushed aside.I just can’t see how an inappropriate comment even of an important thing can hurt someone, if it’s really out of context and there’s no good arguments.
Personally I would like for you to open up just a little bit more. We do know what things are important to you and what things you love and like, but we don’t really know why. Also I would loooove to read a post about your whole life story. Just the highlights of your life and how you ended up to the position you are now.
xoxo
Lorna says
I disagree a bit here, I’ve also been on the receiving end of really harsh and negative comments. When someone comments something nasty about the way you look, or the way you live your life, something really personal, it can be unfair and hurtful. I’m very much for constructive criticism, but bully behaviour and plain rudeness shouldn’t be tolerated. It’s like if you saw someone in the street and decided to walk up to them and be really horrible to them, you wouldn’t do it, so nobody should do it online either. It’s the same thing. But I would like to know more about Marianna too 🙂 She seems like a beautiful person, it would be nice to know a bit of where she came from and things like that 🙂

I don’t know if you read all of your comments (especially the loonger ones) but anyways Im gonna write it! 🙂
Your post is really helpful for beginners.
Firstly, many of the ‘blogging tips/advice’ posts say the same stuff – be yourself, be unique, be active and nothing in particular. And secondly, as a newbie myself in this area I couldnt find anything useful.
But your advice actually is! And it’s also personal which makes it more valuable.
About YOUR blogging style – I absolutely love it! I read quite a lot of blogs, but yours is definitely my favourite!
I like it for many reasons: your fashion sense, cause it’s fresh, elegant and simple; the way you write and keep your readers close (even that you dont reveal too much about yourself) and that all of your posts are interesting to read! x

Hei, huomasin tämän vanhan postauksesi http://mariannan.costume.fi/2012/12/18/getting-ready-for-christmas/ ja mietin että oletko kirjoittanut kokemuksia tuosta Silk’n Flash&Go:n ihokarvanpoistovalo-laitteesta? Haluaisin ehdottomasti kuulla, koska itse harkitsen sen ostamista 🙂

Moikka! 🙂 Äh mä luovutin siinä, olisi tarvinnut enemmän kärsivällisyyttä. Ehkä pitäisi taas aloittaa se ihan mielenkiinnosta uusiks, yllätti vaan miten paljon aikaa se vie. Ihan hyviä tarinoita oon kyllä muilta tosta kuullut!

I have no idea how I missed this so VERY important post. I have been so busy at work lately, this is the reason I guess. Words cannot describe how happy and grateful I am for this insightful post. You’re such a good person, so kind and natural. You’re real in everything you do and show here. There are many arrogant bloggers who just want to be famous, the best and they ignore people around them. You’ve opened so much to us. This is a real inspiration cause you’re so real. Just like a friend of mine, though I have never met you I feel as if I had 🙂

This is such a great post, thank you so much Marianna for sharing your tips and your thoughts!
I started blogging myself in June, yeah I’m a newbie ^^, and I really enjoy it, but I’ve also come to realize, that it is a lot of work and that I’m still struggling with some insecurities (thinking too much about the opinion of others, anybody?). Now you just showed me, that even experienced bloggers and somehow also role models – at least that’s what they’re to me – still have to deal with the same issues and that it obviously is totally normal. This is such a relief for me, so again thank you very much, this was very helpful. (:
Greetings from Germany and have a wonderful evening,

This post only proves to me that you’re not only beautiful but also highly intelligent. Beauty and brains is a very attractive trait. I commend you for inspiring and helping all these young girls follow their passions and dreams just like you did. They really look up to you. Congrats on all your success up to this point and to the many more achievements the future might bring. I’m very proud of you Marianna, way to go!! High five!

Tosi hyvä postaus ja loistavia pointteja, joihin pystyin itse bloggaavana täysin samaistumaan! Oon itse miettinyt tällaisen postauksen tekoa kauan, mutten ole jostain syystä julkaissut, ja siihen olin kerännyt lähes kaikki samat kohdat, joita listasit yllä 🙂 Kiitos hyvästä kirjoituksesta ja overall, loistavasta blogista:) Kiva palata blogiin nyt kun näkee että postauksia on tullut monta uutta 🙂
